Study Released on the App Store Market
Which app store has the largest amount of free applications? Which app store has the cheapest applications? Which app store is growing in the fastest rate?
A Dutch smart phone applications analysis company, Distimo, published an intriguing analysis data of six representative application markets that participated in Mobile World Congress (MWC). Distimo compared a ratio of free versus paid apps, average prices, scales of stores, and growth rate of these firms, including Apple apps store, Google Android market, Blackberry world, Nokia Ovistore, Palm app catalogue, and Windows market place.
According to its research, Google Android’s 57% of applications are free and 32% for Palm with average of 25% for other firms. Distimo analyzed that more free apps are available for the system, because Android’s operating system is an open source where developers want to share their creations with other users.
In the case of price comparison, Palm had the lowest average price of $2.53 per app. Android, Ovistore, and Apple had average of $3, but Blackberry and Windows had twice the price of apps from other firms.
Apple app store was the largest in size. It also had overwhelmingly strong store growth based on the number of new apps registrations during January of 150,998. However, Android’s store size and growth were noticeable as well. The number of registered apps for Android was over 20,000. It firmly maintained its position as having the second largest number of new apps in January.
In addition, most downloaded apps for Apple were games and entertainments with 58% and 18% possession respectively. This result proved that iPhone and iPod have strengths in games and entertainments. Blackberry also had the largest number of game downloads of 29%, but it recorded 18% of utility apps which implied that Blackberry was the most frequently used system for businessmen.
As college students start using smart phones increasingly, different application stores are competing for a larger market share with distinguishable quality and service. It is going to be another intriguing issue to analyze how this result will look like next year, reflecting how firms have dealt with their problems and how successfully they have understood users’ niches.
