There’s nothing ‘American’ about British Petroleum
The scene that has unraveled over the past few weeks is to say the least – disturbing. History has once again repeated itself – with the disaster of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and now the oil spill of 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico immediately affecting the coastal regions of the gulf. Yet, this time nearly 75 percent of the globe will feel the effects in some way or another over the long-term.
April 20, 2010 may have changed the world for the worst – altering our oceans far more than global warming, over-fishing, or any form of waste disposal. The ‘geyser’ which has continued to spew thousands of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico should have been plugged weeks ago.
It is at this point we wait – each hour, each day, and each week only adding to the years of recovery and rehabilitation of the natural habitat. BP and the US Government have failed to act appropriately. If nothing is done, this disaster could surpass the horrific affects of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill of 1989.
Tony Hayward, Byron Grote, other members of BP, and members of our Federal Government – I am calling you out. I am not here to judge, but to merely state you have shown little common sense, nor true concern for the actuality of the situation.
Technologies are available – they have been since day one. You [BP and the Federal Government] have chosen to allow politics, finger pointing, and the grace of God as the excuse for your actions, or lack thereof. The private and public sectors must align and realize the severity of the situation. What would we as a people do if this were a nuclear disaster, biological warfare, or an impending apocalyptical state-of-affair? Would we wait and just point fingers, expecting the issue to resolve itself? I hope not.
Private industry has the solutions – and it is about time to give them the decency of respect, attention, and thought. Case in point, an internationally recognized scientist with the Advanced Magnet Lab in Melbourne FLA, Dr. Rainer Meinke, has contrived an innovative solution to apply magnetic particles in a surrounding iron ring to form a large metal and self bounding cap. Its entire process from concept to solution requires just under three weeks – BP and the Government have yet to even sort through the details.
Industry players and elected officials – you want to shine? Let’s dine and get this done. We, as a people, must learn to co-exist among all creatures, habitats, and patterns – to choose otherwise will lead to the demise of our planet.
